It makes a distinctive wall art choice for a golf room or a gift for a golfer who enjoys Scotland.

These tall, club-shaped forms made me stop near the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles in Scotland. Their slender shafts rise out of rough vegetation and open into broad heads against the sky. I photographed the sculpture in black and white, using the upright frame to keep the full height of the forms and their setting together.

From this viewpoint, the heads turn in several directions. Some show a pale face to the light; others hold a deeper shadow underneath. The shafts repeat as long, narrow lines, but the changing angles above them keep the group from becoming a regular pattern. That combination of repetition and variation was what I wanted to follow.

The ground adds a very different texture. Grasses and low plants gather around the base, while trees fill part of the background. Their irregular branches sit beside the smooth, simplified shapes of the sculpture. I left those natural details in the frame because the forms feel more striking when they are seen rising from an ordinary patch of landscape.

Clouds carry the lighter tones above the trees, giving the sculptural heads room to separate from one another. Monochrome brings the sky, foliage and pale surfaces into the same tonal range while keeping their textures distinct. For me, the photograph holds a familiar idea from golf at an unexpected scale, with the surrounding Scottish landscape making that change in size especially clear.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Gleneagles-Golf-Club-Sculpture-Black-and-White-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792883250
