The lamp overhead gives the arched ceiling and nearby walls a warm tone, while daylight from the window at the far end spreads cooler blue light across the floor. I photographed the passage with that distant window near the centre, letting its brightness draw the eye through the darker interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe floor is an important part of the view. Individual stone slabs catch the light unevenly, and their joints make a sequence of short lines leading down the corridor. Nearer the camera, the floor becomes darker, but there is still enough detail to follow its worn surface. I like how it carries the view forward without needing anything to happen in the passage.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe left side is occupied by a large barred gate. Opposite it, rough plaster and patches of exposed stone give the wall a much less regular appearance. Wires and pipes run along and over the arch, adding smaller lines to the larger curve of the ceiling. I kept these details because they belong to the particular space I was looking at.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe corridor narrows steadily toward the bright window. For me, the photograph’s mood comes from that visible arrangement: enclosing walls, a low curved ceiling and light gathered at the far end.
