I photographed this abandoned pickup in 2009 after coming across it on a backroad detour. The colour image places its damaged body against desert scrub and a broad blue sky, with fine clouds streaking above the cab.

The vehicle is incomplete, but its shape is still recognisable. The rounded roof, open window spaces and remaining panels hold together as a single subject, while fallen bodywork sits lower in the foreground. There is very little shine left. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.

I like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.

I do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. As wall art, it can suit someone interested in vintage vehicles, abandoned places or rustic photography. Its earthy colours and worn surfaces offer detail for a room with wood, metal or other natural textures.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2009

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Abandoned-Desert-Pickup-Truck-Colour-Photography-1b.jpg?v=1791383256
