The pale sky leaves every strand easy to follow. I like how this close view of Bluenose II turns working rigging into a composition built from spacing, texture and small differences between the ropes.

The mast has a much broader surface than the lines around it. Its wood grain and darker marks contrast with the fine cords, while a small fitting near the middle brings several strands together. The rope ladder adds another rhythm: short curved sections crossing the longer uprights. Those repeated curves keep the image from becoming only a group of straight lines.

I photographed this detail in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, in 2014. Black and white lets the pale wood and dark ropes remain distinct without much colour to compete for attention. The close composition leaves the deck and wider harbour outside the view, giving the rigging itself enough space to be studied. I like moving between the narrow strands and the larger texture of the mast.

This Bluenose II rigging wall art suits a coastal home, study or room with an interest in sailing. It offers a nautical subject through a simple, detailed arrangement rather than a full vessel portrait. From farther away, the repeated lines establish the picture; closer up, the wood grain, rope loops and fitting become more apparent. The photograph holds both the practical structure of the rigging and the quiet pattern created by its many parts.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Bluenose-II-Mast-and-Rope-Rigging-Black-and-White-Wall-Art-1.jpg?v=1791517561
