A knitted hat sits low on its head, one arm folds across the chest, and the other rests near the rail. I photographed the unexpected figure in black and white, interested in how an ordinary display object changed character in that setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe low viewpoint keeps the roof edge and posts in the composition. Garland and strands of lights run across the foreground, while a dark window and rough wall establish the building behind. The mannequin’s smoother, pale surface stands apart from all those smaller textures.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the almost human quality of the pose. The tilted head and folded arm are recognisable gestures, even though the figure is clearly an object. The winter hat adds another familiar detail to a placement that still seems odd from the street below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI made a second photograph at the same installation showing a seated mannequin nearby. The square compositions give the two images a natural relationship, while this one holds its own through the upright figure and diagonal railing. Black and white brings the roof, decorative strands and pale body into a clear tonal arrangement.
