Some stand alone, while others carry broad horizontal lintels, creating a varied outline against the summer sky. I photographed Stonehenge in England in 2008, keeping the open ground and clouds within the view rather than concentrating on one stone.

Black and white makes the surfaces especially interesting. The taller stones have different shades and textures, with pale faces, darker edges and irregular tops. Gaps between them allow the sky to remain part of the arrangement. Those openings are as important to me as the solid forms, because they keep a very heavy subject from feeling closed.

The foreground is a broad, quieter area of grass. Above the stones, small clouds sit beneath longer streaks across the sky. I like how those softer forms relate to the more abrupt edges below. The landscape gives the monument room, while the clouds provide detail without competing with the stonework.

What I wanted to hold was the physical presence of Stonehenge within its setting. The photograph does not need a theory about the monument’s purpose to make its scale and structure compelling. It can be enjoyed as a recognizable place, a study of weathered stone or a landscape with an unusually strong central subject. For someone drawn to England or archaeological sites, the view offers both clear detail and enough open space to look slowly.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Stonehenge-England-Black-and-White-Landscape-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792293982
