It was one of the biggest trips of my life. This leopard had been lying in wait with very little movement for a long time. When it rose and began to stalk forward, I watched from inside our vehicle and made the photograph I had been waiting for.

The leopard remains partly concealed by the grass even as its head and shoulders come clearly into view. Its face turns slightly to the right, with the mouth open and whiskers visible against the surrounding stems. The spotted coat overlaps the tangled vegetation, making the body less immediately distinct than the eyes and muzzle. I liked that balance of visibility and concealment. The softer grass in the foreground adds depth, while the sharper details around the animal place it firmly within the habitat I was watching.

Black and white brings the coat pattern and grass into a shared range of tones. It helps the small details work together without taking attention away from the leopard’s movement. I wanted to keep the photograph connected to the experience of waiting, then seeing the animal step out from its resting position. As wildlife wall art for a living room, study, or office, it offers both a clear view of the leopard and a closer study of how its markings merge with the grass. Every return to the image takes me back to that moment in the Serengeti.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2023

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Serengeti-Leopard-Stalking-Through-Grass-Black-and-White-Wildlife-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792237516
