That uneven survival of detail is what makes the photograph interesting to me.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA dark vertical crack crosses the centre of the face, while other seams and worn patches interrupt the hat. The painted lines and the wall’s own marks overlap, creating an image that cannot be separated from its surface. Looking more closely shifts attention from the familiar figure to the layers of colour and texture around him.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI photographed the mural in 2011. The image presents Uncle Sam as found on this wall, with neither the wear nor the surrounding colour removed from the view. As an urban photography print, it combines a recognizable Americana subject with the irregular character of a painted facade.
