Large faces, overlapping lettering and worn plaster share the Cuban street scene around a narrow wooden door.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTwo large eyes dominate this Havana wall, their painted outlines spreading toward a narrow wooden door. I photographed the scene in black and white during my 2017 visit to Cuba. The monochrome treatment brings the graffiti, worn plaster and dark doorway together without losing their very different textures.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI came across the building while wandering through Havana. What caught my attention was the way several images occupied the same modest stretch of wall: a rounded cartoon figure on the left, overlapping lettering near the middle and a face drawn at a much larger scale. The eyes hold the composition even where other marks interrupt them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove the paintings, a small barred opening and loose cables add another layer of lines. The roof edge, neighboring building and strip of cloudy sky keep the wall connected to its surroundings. I left enough pavement below it to give the photograph a clear base, rather than isolating the artwork as a close detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the strength of this photograph lies in that meeting of painted expression and everyday architecture. Crumbling patches remain visible beneath the drawing, while the door offers a solid, dark rectangle beside the face.
