From a high overlook in Canyonlands National Park, I photographed its bright curves as they passed between buttes, ledges and broad cliff faces. The water appears in separate sections, inviting the eye to follow it even where rock temporarily hides its course.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI filled the frame with terrain. Leaving out the sky made the relationship between those layers more important: pale cliff tops above darker walls, rounded foreground slopes, and a small central butte surrounded by much larger formations. What first seems a substantial feature becomes modest when seen against the rest of the canyon.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe colour moves from warm ochre in the foreground to muted red and brown through the middle distance. Touches of green follow the river, and the far cliffs soften into cooler grey-blue tones. I like that natural progression because it gives the photograph depth without relying on an exaggerated colour contrast.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt closer viewing distances, small channels and the texture of the desert floor begin to emerge. From farther away, the reflective water and the large shapes of the cliffs hold the view together. This Utah landscape offers a broad nature subject for someone drawn to the American Southwest, canyon geology or earth-toned interiors.
